Industry Testimonial

Vance Wheeler - Managing Director
WV Management Ltd, Wodonga

The Meat Processing Industry encompasses more regulations than most other industries in Australia. There is meat safety, animal welfare, export requirements, perishable stock control, product traceability, OHS in a high risk environment, environmental controls, and the list goes on.

WV Management is a labour hire company that supplies the entire meat production workforce to Norvic, a meat processing abbatoir in Wodonga. Norvic introduced a traineeship program early in 2005 to meet compliance objectives and to standardise training outcomes in a workforce that comprises a high ratio of young workers.

A key element in choosing a training organisation was to achieve an integrated training package. It was essential to have a trainer on site regularly, who understood the site culture, who was familiar with the site Quality Assurance program and protocols, and who could interact closely with the various production and support departments. They also had to be skilled in meat processing and be able to relate to and inspire young people.

Innoven's Meat Processing trainer, Scott Robinson, was able to deliver exactly what was required. He customised the Mintrac training programs to reflect the site practices and standards and delivered training when it suited Norvic. Scott has earned respect from the workforce and management team at Norvic with his focus on outcomes, rather than just "obtaining the certificate".

Innoven was able to deliver a wide range of training from the formal traineeships at Certificate levels II, III and IV, to First Aid, HACCP, forklift, meat safety, HSR training and Rendering. When it came to specialised training which was outside Innoven's scope, Scott sourced appropriate trainers providing a complete training service.

Costs associated with training are always a hurdle but Innoven's ability to provide traineeships, standard profile hours and fee for service delivery have allowed the most cost effective training options to be selected for each individual.

The results for Norvic are already apparant. Employee turnover has reduced and process quality outcomes (product yields, food safety, OHS, environment) have improved as people develop an understanding of why procedures are in place and the consequences of not performing the task correctly.

Ad hoc internal training programs have now been incorporated into the trainneeship program to provide greater workplace flexibility. Supervisors know that everyone who has completed a Certificate II has the skills to perform these tasks. Traineeships are being soundly locked in as the fast track to career development.
