Student Testimonial

AmandaAmanda Geddes
Certificate III in Meat Processing (Slaughtering)

Amanda Geddes was encouraged to become a teacher when she finished her VCE. Deferring for a year to save some money for her future university studies she took a job on the floor at Norvic Food Processing in Wodonga and never looked back.

While it may seem an unusual career choice Amanda says she loves her job and is very pleased with the support from Norvic Food Processing and the meat processing trainers from Innoven.

"When I took the job it was just going to be temporary but 3 years later I am still here!", said Amanda. "I am a core team member which means I assist with mentoring other staff. I am the only female slaughterperson here at Norvic so I have a role to support other women on the floor."

"Being a slaughterperson is hard physical work and we have six times more injuries than any other industry, so it is very important we understand how to handle knives correctly," said Amanda.

All the training for the course is done on the job in the workplace by Innoven trainers embedded in the organisation. Norvic Food Processing also have a training room specifically for the off the floor training and have a culture of supporting their staff in all training necessary to do the job safely and efficiently.

"Scott (Robinson) knows the industry really well and knows what he is talking about," said Amanda. "He is easy to approach and nothing is too much trouble for him if you don't understand something."

"Having the training on site also means we are learning things that apply specifically to our workplace. You are actually on the line learning new skills and applying them straight away." The on site training also means that staff are not taking time off to attend training.

"Eventually I would like to do a traineeship in the Human Resources field and be involved in training other staff. I am really interested in leadership and management and I know with Norvic and Innoven I will be supported in whatever direction I want to take in the company."
