Paul Paul McDonaldPaul McDonald

Certificate III in Food Processing (Retail Baking)

Paul McDonald grew up on farm watching his Mum create wonderful home cooked creations in the family kitchen. "Mum always baked and I liked to help, I was probably a nuisance more than anything but it did spark an interest in food and cooking!"

Paul enjoyed making cakes at home and didn't need any convincing this was a career path he wanted to follow. "I worked for a few years in bakeries and a pizza shop then got a job at Freeman's as an apprentice baker – it was the best move I ever made," suggests Paul.

"The GOTAFE training and assessment was done at my workplace. There were some classes to attend at GOTAFE but I found these were a great opportunity for learning off the other apprentices."

"Even though I was training on-the-job, the GOTAFE teachers were very helpful and responded quickly to any questions I might have had," said Paul. "I am considering doing some more training down the track, probably in management, just in case I want to run my own bakery one day."

Paul's study and hard work paid off in 2006 as he was the recipient of the 2006 Baking Apprentice of the Year Award and won second prize for the categories of Cakes, Cookies and Pastries and first prize in Breads.
